Our Projects

Regional District of Mount Waddington

Community Futures Mt. Waddington is partnering with the Regional District to update and develop the regions sector policies and create a comprehensive strategy across key sectors.  The aim is to:

  • Provide a summary of demographic and economic activity and trends in the region over the past 10 years.
  • Identify key infrastructure and resources that will have a strategic impact on future development options, most notably, telecommunications, education, managerial resources, First Nations, parks and recreation, tourist attractions, etc.
  • For each strategic sector, develop a profile showing current status, recent trends, opportunities and policy positions to influence future development.
  • The report will effectively provide a strategy that will include a work plan for economic development tasks for each sector of the short to medium term (1-5 years).

The strategy will be developed over the Summer 2014.

Malcolm Island

The Malcolm Island Economic Development Strategy is a collective effort by the residents of Malcolm Island in partnership with the Regional District and Community Futures Mt. Waddington, to improve the economic viability of the island, and in the process improve the quality of life, create a more vibrant and welcoming community, and ensure that people who want to live on the island are able to find and keep meaningful work and stay on the island.  With the decline of jobs and revenues from fishing, the residents of Malcolm Island are looking to maintain their island life style while at the same time create opportunities to sustain themselves.

The final report is expected in early May 2014.

Port McNeill

The fact that Port McNeill, Malcolm Island, and the Regional District of Mount Waddington are all undertaking strategic or economic development plans at the same time provide an excellent opportunity to examine the local economy of Port McNeill and forge partnerships which will help to align strategies to work together for regional economic development.

The Town of Port McNeill wants to create an actionable strategy that takes local conditions into account and builds on local assets.  While the elements of the project would be discussed in the kick-off meeting, the final strategy will likely include the following elements:

  • Clearly identified community values and objectives to guide future economic development
  • A detailed set of short, medium, and long-term actions, strategies and initiatives that take local assets, regional partnership opportunities, and a wide range of constraints into account
  • A plan to operationalize and implement actions, including sequencing, resources, and organization/department responsible
  • A set of indicators and performance measures to monitor the impact of actions and progress towards desired outcomes

Work on this strategy has commenced and will continue through the Summer 2014
